Disc Rotors and Brake Drums

Brake Drums

discs drumsBrake drums range in size and as such have a varying volume of steel content. The Brakes shoes run along the inside of the drum, wearing out the inside of drum.

Generally, the higher the steel content the higher your investment. Brake drum pricing is also related to whether it is a commonly manufactured drum or not.

Disc Rotors - Standard

discs drums Brake discs range in size, width, construction, shape and can be vented or solid. Disc rotors wear out as brake pads wear. All rotors have a minimum thickness and must be replaced once the minimum thickness is reached.

It is highly recommended that rotors be machined when doing a pad replacement. You might also consider machining your rotors if your car has vibration issues; however it is best to get advice from your local brake specialist.

Cleaning and fitting new rotors would take between 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the make and model of the vehicle. Disc machining takes approximately 30 minutes once the rotors are off the car.

Disc Rotors - Slotted - Performance

discs drums As with standard rotors, performance discs vary in construction.

Most performance rotors are the same shape of your current rotors, so can easily be fitted to your vehicle with no modification to your caliper mount or wheel/rim assembly.

The rotor surface can be slotted, slotted and dimpled or slotted and cross drilled. There are also options of heat treated steel and performance coatings. Performance rotors look good and perform great. Ask your local brake specialist which option is best for your needs.
